With reports coming out of Spain that Manchester United are looking to trigger the French defenders £53m release clause at Barcelona, is it a good move for Mourinho?
Samuel Umtiti has had a very good start to his season in Barcelona clocking up 12 appearances and helping his side to 6 clean sheets in those matches as well as remaining unbeaten.
With Eric Bailly suffering with injury and Victor Lindelof not really hitting the ground running since his move to Manchester a central defender is high on Mourinho’s wishlist as he looks to close the gap on their local rivals in the title race.
With Liverpool completing the £75m signing of Virgil Van Dijk already in the upcoming transfer window, the £53m required to land Umtiti does not look unrealistic given the current transfer climate and Barcelona would still make a £30m profit on the player they only signed in 2016.
Umtiti moved from Lyon to Barcelona in July 2016 in a deal worth around £22m and has seen improvement in performances since his time in Catalonia which has triggered interest from other top European teams.
I personally believe it would be a strong signing for a Manchester United team that need more strength at the back in order to provide the base for their team to support their indisputable attacking quality.
The worry for Mourinho will be the players injury which could see him unavailable until after January.
The big question that remains is whether or not the player himself can be convinced to make the move to Manchester where he is unlikely to win silverware this season when Barcelona are set for another successful season.
It would be interesting to hear the thoughts of Manchester United fans, do you feel Samuel Umtiti would strengthen your squad to bring you closer to your local rivals?
