Last week it looked like Brighton had made significant ground in their attempts to land Moussa Dembele from Celtic for a fee of around £18m, however, sources from inside the club appear to show that a deal is nowhere near close.
Sky Sports presenter Jim White tweeted today that he understands there has yet to be any contact between Brighton and Celtic over the player:
This news is likely to put other clubs on alert as they look for potential goalscorers to boost their squads to avoid relegation to the Championship.
With Southampton now cash-rich following the sale of Van Dijk to Liverpool they could look to boost their attacking options in January having only managed 20 goals this season.
Other clubs that have been mentioned over the past 24 hours include Newcastle United, Burnley & Crystal Palace. It seems a fee of £18m will be enough to land the Celtic marksman however, which club is willing to take the risk and bring him in to turn their fortunes around this season?
I think with Burnley doing so well this season it is unlikely that they will splash £18m for Dembele and that fee may put him out of reach of Crystal Palace who will have more confidence in their ability to survive the drop since Roy took over as manager.
Newcastle & Southampton would seem the most likely clubs at this time if Rafa can get funds from the board to spend in January as they need goals more than most. If Brighton could get the deal done then it could be enough to keep them up this season as they have performed admirably defensively this season and an increase in goals at the other end should win the vital points so £18m could be a fair price to pay for Premier League survival.
Where do you think Dembele will be come the end of January? Would you fancy him at your club? Celtic fans, would you want to see him leave?
